Xin SONG

Artistic Statement

Song's recent work borrows pictures from all kinds of magazines, in the service of large questions about social and political values.

Many of the issues are discussed in these magazines because they are questions people already think about every day: Current affairs, Politics, War, Health, Beauty, Fashion, Population, Poverty, Luxury, The Environment, The Beauty of Nature, Modern Life, Technology, Sex, and Taboo.

While Song is collecting images for her paper-cut collage, she considers each small piece and its meaning, and when each piece finds its way into her work, it brings that message and connection to the world into her art.

Every day she sees, hears, feels, and thinks about the world through magazines that people glance through and then throw away. For Song, she has found importance and value in these materials, as in many ways they mirror the world around us.
