Xu Ming

Xu Ming, a prominent overseas Chinese painter, was born in Shanghai in August 1945. His ancestral home is Fenghua, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. He received his early education in Nanjing.

His father was an avid art collector and close friend of two masters of Chinese painting and calligraphy: Lin Sanzhi, the “sage of cursive script,” and Fu Baoshi, a leading figure in modern Chinese ink painting. He also shared a martial arts lineage with the legendary artist Xu Beihong. Growing up in such a cultural environment, Xu Ming began studying calligraphy under Lin Sanzhi and frequently painted alongside Fu Baoshi’s son, Fu Xiaoshi. He was later mentored by several art masters, including Li Shan, Wu Zuoren, Liao Jingwen, and Liu Haisu.

After graduating from Nanjing Institute of Light Industry Arts, he began his artistic journey in Xinjiang in 1967. In 1980, he studied at Lingnan Art Garden in Hong Kong under master Zhao Shao’ang, a leading figure of the Lingnan School. In 1981, he moved to Australia, and in 1986, he relocated to Vancouver, Canada, where he continues to reside. Xu currently maintains studios in Nanjing, Tokyo, and other cities.

Since 1981, Xu Ming has held nearly 100 solo and group exhibitions across mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, and more.
